Hospitality jobs presented: the HGA apprenticeship (hotel and catering assistant)

Do you like organizing for a living? Do you always find your way to your destination with your directions? Do you always know where the action is and where the best events are taking place? Do you love working independently? Do you think the hotel and catering industry is an exciting place to work? Then we have the perfect apprenticeship for you: Become an HGA!

HGA - what does that mean?

The world of tourism is built on these three letters. Hotel and catering assistants are the be-all and end-all of the business. They are the interface between all departments because they have extensive knowledge in almost all areas: Front Office, Back Office, Housekeeping, Service and Kitchen. In short: HGAs take care of the accommodation, catering and support of guests and all the rest.

What exactly does an HGA do?

As an HGA, you plan, monitor and optimize independently. A large part of the day-to-day work of a hotel and catering assistant involves organizational and administrative tasks. You will handle all IT-supported correspondence with guests, suppliers and authorities. You will take care of reservations, the room plan, room allocation, marketing and sales, cash management, handling payment transactions and organizing events. The HGA is also responsible for internal communication.

On the commercial side, you will be responsible for bookkeeping. This ranges from stock accounting and personnel accounting to food and beverage accounting. This also includes cost accounting and calculation.

Your area of responsibility also includes direct guest care in the front office, in the restaurant or in housekeeping. At reception, you will welcome and say goodbye to guests and handle check-in and check-out. In a personal conversation, you will respond to guests' wishes and complaints and provide information about the hotel, the city's cultural offerings, organize leisure activities, recommend restaurants and give directions.
