Gastro jobs presented - What does... housekeeping actually do?

Housekeeping - these are the invisible angels of the hotel industry. With their keen sense of hygiene and tidiness, housekeeping staff make a significant contribution to the success of the hotel. After all, room cleanliness is always among the top ten customer complaints in hotel reviews. In most cases, it only becomes clear what this department does when the hotel's blessing hangs askew: A burnt-out light bulb here, a withered plant in the hotel lobby there and limescale stains in the bathroom to boot.

The tasks in housekeeping

The tasks are varied. And one thing is clear: you have to be born to work in housekeeping, because if you don't have a sense of order and cleanliness, you're out of place in this department. To summarize: Housekeeping is not only responsible for room cleaning, it also includes cleaning the corridors, public areas of the hotel such as the lobby, stairwells, etc.

The devil is in the detail and this is where you can recognize the experts in this field: who wants to move into a room with the smell of chlorine? Housekeeping knows how to clean and disinfect heavily used areas such as door handles, flights of stairs or table surfaces, even without creating a clinical odor. Checking and managing the minibar is also part of the room cleaning tasks. Absolute cleanliness and hygiene in the bathroom goes without saying. The removal of limescale deposits needs to be learned and regular, thorough cleaning will also put an end to the typical mildew. Anyone who works in housekeeping is familiar with the special hygiene regulations and knows how important it is to comply with them.

Outside of the rooms, the department is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the public areas of the hotel. This includes, for example, decorating the lobby and caring for the plants in the hotel. Housekeeping is also responsible for the management and maintenance of the hotel laundry and even the hotel uniforms.

Housekeeping works closely with reception, but also with the technical department, which takes care of various repairs and maintenance work.

The positions in housekeeping

Housekeeping is managed by the housekeeper or executive housekeeper. All the threads come together in this position. This is where you exchange information with the technical department, where you know the status of the rooms and where the duty rosters are drawn up.
Depending on the size of the establishment, there is an assistant and deputy. In any case, the chambermaids, valets or bellboys, cleaners and sometimes even seamstresses, launderers and gardeners report to the housekeeper. Housekeeping in larger hotels is often carried out by external companies.
